I posted the unboxing of ASUS K42JC-235R a couple of weeks ago and here’s the review from Jennifer on her impression and how the ASUS K42JC performs while compares it to her now deceased Lenovo Laptop.
I did some minor editing and you can read her review after the jump.
When my Lenovo N3000 crashed and died on me I took that as a sign that I needed a new laptop. While I was looking for a replacement, I borrowed my brother’s Asus A42J, which in one way or the other looks and feels like the Asus K42J-235R.
Hardware and Design
The looks and design of Asus A42J and Asus K42J-235R are not too different. There are differences, but its so small that you wont even notice it. My K42JC-235R has brown textured touchpad but has a black external cover, while the A42J has a black striped smooth finish feel. There is also the smudge proof palm rest that would keep your laptop in its brand new state every time and fingerprint-free.
Security wise, the K42JC has a facial recognition system upon log on. It can recognize you in any light condition and can still recognize you even if you are wearing a headgear like a head-set or your favorite girlie-accessories.
It has a 14″ HD LED backlit big compared to 10″ small display of my dead Lenovo N3000, the 14″ display has a 1366 x 768 screen resolution which is a good complement to the NVIDIA® GeForce® 310M GPU. You can also see the VGA web camera right at the top center of the 14″ HD LED backlit screen. The overall design looks solid and has a stylish profile.
By comparison ASUS K42JC has a better screen resolution than my old Lenovo N3000, since ASUS K42JC gives justice to the images and photos that you see on different web sites. My Lenovo is kind of dim, that I sometimes I need to zoom in the object I am looking at to see a better image of the picture. The ASUS K42JC OS is Windows 7 Home Basics and not the sluggish Windows Vista that is being used on my Lenovo. ASUS K42JC boot-up much faster compare it to Lenove using Vista.

As you can see on the Windows Experience Index (WEI) the lowest rating is on the graphics which is understandable, since the ASUS K42JC is using NVIDIA® GeForce® 310M. Even though I’m not a hardcore gamer, I can still play games on the ASUS K42JC, NVIDIA® GeForce® 310M with with 1GB DDR3 RAM is more then enough for me, since I usually use my laptop for photos and videos and the 500GB serial SATA gives me a lot of room to store my photos and videos, and I don’t need to use any external hard drive for this toy.
The ASUS K42JC-235R has a full sized keyboard and uses a chiclet type key-caps for keeping off dusts and makes typing comfortable even for hours of use. Both side of ASUS K42JC-235R have the different ports and jacks that will allow you to connect different devices. Ports like VGA port/Mini D-sub 15-pin, 3 USB 2.0 port, Ethernet port, stereo mic and head set jack, HDMI, SD and MMC card reader.
ASUS K42JC is using an Altec Lansing premium sound and listening to music is like having a dolby digital surround quality music, similar to the audio system my friends install on their cars. Clear and very crisp, that you can hear all the instruments that they are using.
With its ASUS Power4Gear technology the fan of ASUS K42JC is very quiet and you will not even notice that there is a fan. Compare to my deceased lenovo, its fan was so noisy, you would think there is an airplane taking off.
I got my ASUS K42JC-235R for P36,000.00 at PC Live Megamall, which was marked down from 8,988.00. Overall if you’re an average gamer, loves photos and loves watching videos and movies on your laptop, the ASUS K42JC-235R is a perfect fit for me.
