It’s official on June 6, Apple will be announcing their cloud-base music service and they are calling it “iCloud”. If you’re an avid reader of tech (blogs) news site, then you will notice that majority of them have an article or two about Apple’s announcement and “iCloud”. Full PR after the break.
What is it all about anyway?
iCloud is said to be Apple’s answer to Amazon’s Cloud Player for Web and Google’s Music Beta. Unlike Amazon and Google, it is yet unclear whether iCloud is a music only service or if it will more than music. Remember Apple itunes store is does not only sell music download but also Apps, eBooks, videos and can organize your photos as well.
Unlike Apple’s iCloud, Amazon’s Cloud Player for Web and Google’s Music Beta; cloud music services allows you to upload your music in the “cloud” and access these music as long as you are using a net-enabled device like a tablet or a smartphone.
Amazon have it, Google have it, so what’s the fuzz about Apple saying that they’ll be announcing something similar?
For one, it’s Apple that we are talking about and Apple is the company to beat when it comes to selling (digital) music online and controls 70% of U.S. music download. Another thing about the Apple iCloud service is that Apple was able to close a cloud-licensing deal with major record companies namely; EMI Music, Warner Music, Sony Music and Universal Music, while Amazon and Google are unlicensed which can be a deal breaker for both company.
Anyway, whatever happens between now and June 6, I’m sure Apple will take advantage of their dominance in the “licensed” music (iTunes, iPods), mobile (iPhone) and tablet (iPad) space for the iCloud service and for sure consumer and analyst alike will be watching and waiting anxiously about the details. Together with the iCloud announcement, Apple will also unveil the latest upgrade to their mobile OS that iOS 5 and Lion, the eighth major release of Mac OS® X. So you can be sure that this be the topic in Tech blogs until June 6.
