SMS Tracking for Saudi Women

It’s a fact you here in Saudi Arabia, you can receive SMS notification whenever you commited traffic violation or when a transaction has been made on your bank account.

Now it looks like that this same technology is being used to notify Saudi men when women who are their dependent including their wife leave the country even though they’re traveling together.

According to Al Arabiya “SMS Notification started last week when Saudi Male guardian started receiving text messages from the immigration authorities informing him that his wife had left the international airport in Riyadh.”

Before Saudi men had the option of requesting alert messages about their dependents’ cross-border movement but it looks like the switch have been turned on in order for the SMS notification to be sent automatically.

This move by the Saudi government was quickly receive a lot of criticism most on twitter and here are some of them.

  • “Hello Taliban, herewith some tips from the Saudi e-government!” read one post.
  • “Why don’t you cuff your women with tracking ankle bracelets too?” wrote Israa.
  • “Why don’t we just install a microchip into our women to track them around?” joked another.
  • “If I need an SMS to let me know my wife is leaving Saudi Arabia, then I’m either married to the wrong woman or need a psychiatrist,” tweeted Hisham.

It is unclear what prompted Saudi Government to automatically track Saudi Women or if this is also in effect to expats who are with their family in the Kingdom but one thing is clear that there will always be the good and bad side of every new (and even existing) Technology and I sure hope that it will always be on the good side.
