Microsoft releases Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

Microsoft;

With the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, we are introducing some fun, new ways to get creative – from bringing mixed reality and 3D to the masses, to faster broadcasting for gaming, to turning photos and videos into real memories, and so much more. The Fall Creators Update can be experienced on a wide variety of Windows 10 PCs and on a range of Windows Mixed Reality headsets.

Augmented reality!

Microsoft to bring Spotify to Groove Music Pass customers

Microsoft;

We will continue to invest in and update the Groove Music app on all Windows devices to support playback and management of owned music, but after December 31, 2017, the Groove Music app will no longer offer the option to stream, purchase, and download music.

And;

An update to the Groove Music app including the ability to move music to Spotify, will be available for Windows Insiders beginning this week. The Groove Music app update for Windows 10 and Xbox One devices will roll out broadly the week of October 9, 2017 and will enable Groove Music Pass customers to move existing music collections and playlists to Spotify. Groove Music Pass content will be available to move to Spotify until at least January 31, 2018.

Makes sense for Microsoft, since developing its own streaming service is much harder and complicated than a music store. There are lots of things that they need to consider, plus the fact that Spotify and other music streaming service already have their own userbase and considerable marketshare.

If ever Microsoft plans to dip its toes in the music streaming space again, an outright acquisition will be the best way for them to go but for now, partnership with the leading music streaming service is the next best thing.

Gates Makes Largest Donation Since 2000 With $5 Billion Gift

Tom Metcalf, writing for Bloomberg;

Bill Gates made his largest single gift since the turn of the century, giving away Microsoft Corp. shares that accounted for 5 percent of his fortune, the world’s biggest.

The billionaire donated 64 million of the software maker’s shares to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation on June 6, according to Securities and Exchange Commission filings released Monday. The shares were valued at $4.6 billion at the time.

It’s amazing that despite his billions of donations, Bill Gates remains that richest person in the world, even though he is technically unemployed. 🙂

Device partners including Acer, ASUS, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Samsung and Toshiba offer a range of new Windows 10 PCs for education today, starting at $189 USD. In the coming months, these partners will also offer a range of Windows 10 S devices, from powerful and affordable Windows Ink and touch PCs to beautiful premium devices.

Xbox Live Creators Program

Microsoft;

Xbox Live will soon be open to all developers via the Xbox Live Creators Program – no concept approval required! You will be able to rapidly publish your game to Xbox One or Windows 10 through a short and simplified certification process.

The Xbox Live Creators Program will let any game developer create and publish Xbox games. Indie or solo game developers can directly publish their games to the Xbox platform. There is a $19 USD to $99 USD one-time registration fee needed to enroll for the program.

If you’re an Apple Developer, the Xbox Live Creators Program looks very much like the Apple Developer Program.
