Indonesian ride-sharing service Go-Jek to expand in the Philippines this coming 2018

Looks like another ride-sharing service wants to take a shot at solving, or at least lessening the traffic in the Philippines, as news of Indonesian ride-sharing service Go-Jek to expand in the Philippines next year.

In an article on GMA News, Ajey Gore, Go-Jek’s Group CTO said in an interview that “almost all Southeast Asian countries are on the radar over the next three, six to 12 months. The Philippines will be the first one just to figure out how things work.”

Go-Jek is a ride-sharing service that started in Indonesia last 2010 with a call centre and fleet of 20 riders. Today, it has more than 400,000 drivers and includes motorcycles, cars and trucks, and available in 50 cities in Indonesia.

Once operational in the Philippines, they will go head-to-head with Uber and Grab, not to mention LTFRB.

Introducing Messenger Kids, a New App For Families to Connect

Facebook Newsroom;

Today, in the US, we’re rolling out a preview of Messenger Kids, a new app that makes it easier for kids to safely video chat and message with family and friends when they can’t be together in person. After talking to thousands of parents, associations like National PTA, and parenting experts in the US, we found that there’s a need for a messaging app that lets kids connect with people they love but also has the level of control parents want.

To give kids and parents a fun, safer solution, we built Messenger Kids, a standalone app that lives on kids’ tablets or smartphones but can be controlled from a parent’s Facebook account. Whether it’s using video chat to talk to grandparents, staying in touch with cousins who live far away, or sending mom a decorated photo while she’s working late to say hi, Messenger Kids opens up a new world of online communication to families. This preview is available on the App Store for iPad, iPod touch and iPhone.

Firefox version 57 Quantum and WordPress 4.9 now available

A couple of updates on the tools that I’m using online. First the browser, Mozilla just release Firefox 57 Quantum. If you are using Firefox, you will probably get a notification to restart the browser to apply the new update, if not then you can download the latest version of Firefox at mozilla.org.

Here’s what’s new, from the release notes;

  • A completely new browsing engine, designed to take full advantage of the processing power in modern devices
  • A redesigned interface with a clean, modern appearance, consistent visual elements, and optimizations for touch screens
  • A unified address and search bar. New installs will see this unified bar. Learn how to add the stand-alone search bar to the toolbar
  • A revamped new tab page that includes top visited sites, recently visited pages, and recommendations from Pocket (in the US, Canada, and Germany)
  • An updated product tour to orient new and returning Firefox users
  • AMD VP9 hardware video decoder support for improved video playback with lower power consumption
  • An expanded section in preferences to manage all website permissions

I’m one of the few who still prefers Firefox over Google Chrome, I cannot exactly put my fingers into it but even though it’s buggy at times there just something in Firefox that’s better than using Chrome. You can read the full release notes of Firefox Quantum here.

Next is WordPress 4.9, just got an update and it looks like its more on the performance side than anything else. If you’re using WordPress as your CMS for your blog or website, you can automatically update to the latest version by going to ADMIN > DASHBOARD > UPDATE, just make sure you back up your database incase something went wrong.

To know more about WordPress 4.9, you can go here.

Philippine-based ZAP have been accepted in the Unilever Foundry programme

ZAP is one of the 30 startup that will participate in Unilever’s Foundry programme that provides access to their corporate network as well as the Level3 co-working network.

ZAP is a cash back service that leverages terminals and phone numbers to help people get their rewards. So for companies within the ZAP network, it uses a points system rather than cash. These points can then be turned-in to buy items.

It received funding from Tony Fernandes, the Founder of the budget airline company Air Asia.

If you take a closer look, ZAP is a perfect fit for Unilever, since it could be boost the sales of Unilever brands with the help of ZAP’s cash-back/rewards program.

Duel between United States’ Megabot Mk. III and Japan’s Kuratas will be live stream on Twitch.tv this October 17

I can see a lot of people being disappointed by this upcoming duel of two giant robot. Since this is in real life, these robots will not be like those that we see in the movies and animations.

The reason why many are excited of this, (may be!!) because we have been conditioned to think that a giant robot in real life will be similar to the ones that we see on movies, TV, specially those in animes like Voltron, Voltes V, Gundam, Pacific RIM, Real Steel, etc.

Incase you want to watch it, you can watch the duel via this twitch link: https://go.twitch.tv/megabotsinc.

iOS 11.0.3 Update

Official trailer of Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Let’s nerd out for a little bit. This is blog is usually exclusive for tech related article but the Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer is too good and I’m too excited not to post it here.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be in theaters on Christmas day!

Enjoy!

LeBron James Fearless

This will be the first time a company promotes autonomous vehicles to the general public. We know companies are working on self-driving cars but Intel is the first to tap a public figure, and arguably the most influential athlete in the world.

The video is entitled “Fearless” which is appropriate, since the time and effort to research and develop self-driving car will all be for nothing if people cannot overcome their fear of riding these autonomous cars.

Watch the Google Pixel 2 Event!

Today, it Google’s Pixel 2 Event!

The company is expected to officially announce Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, plus other hardware like new Chromebooks, VR news and devices, a new Pixel book and a variants of Google Home that will compete against the Amazon Echo dot.

Stay tune for more!

GrabCar and Uber will no longer accept bookings to deliver a package without the rider

Makes sense, if you factor in the safety of the driver and liability that will fall on the driver if the items that they’ll deliver are contraband.

However, this makes a great concept for a startup, an on-demand delivery no questions asks, a legal version of “Transporter”.
